REI Revelcloud Jacket Review
In the last few years there has been a surge of down and synthetic insulation jackets on the market intended to replace fleece as the mid-layer of choice. REI’s answer to the popular Patagonia Down Sweater has been the Women’s Revelcloud Jacket. Designed to be worn by itself at temperatures between 50F to 65F or in colder temperatures as a mid-layer, this jacket is offered in a variety of different sizes and a multitude of colors and also uses recycled materials in its design.
Design and Materials
The shell on the REI Revelcloud jacket is Pertex Quantum fabric made from 70% recycled polyester and the insulation is a synthetic insulation called Primaloft Eco which contains about 50% recycled bottle material. For each kilogram of Primaloft insulation that is made, approximately 28 post consumer recycled bottles are used, which averages to about 6 recycled bottles per jacket. The Primaloft manufacturer boasts that this type of insulation is breathable, compressible, thermally efficient, water resistant and dries faster than traditional goose down. The remainder of the jacket is made with either polyester or polyester blends.
Both the shell of the jacket and the inner lining feel smooth and almost silky soft to the touch. The outer shell does wrinkle easily and it doesn’t seem to become unwrinkled even after extended wear. The stitched thread on the quilted polyester shell begins to come undone in a few places after a fair amount of use. This unraveling does not occur significantly enough in any one location to affect the quilting or jacket performance, it is more of an appearance issue.
For pockets, the jacket has three, two main zippered hand warmer pockets and one small zippered pocket above the left chest. The hand pockets are not large enough to stuff the jacket into however each one easily fits a fisted hand or other small objects. The chest pocket is slightly smaller than the hand pockets and has a small hole in the rear to pass your ipod or phone earphones through.
The Revelcloud jacket fits well on a petite torso and doesn’t ride too low over the hips or rear as it is meant to sit at hip length. The arms tend to be quite longer than necessary even during activities which require reaching, stretching and moving your arms frequently. The jacket has a sweater like fit and is roomy in the areas needed most, the chest and shoulders, which is great to allow for a full range of unimpeded movement.
The neck diameter is perfect and not too tight when the jacket is fully zipped up. There is also a chinguard over the zipper to prevent it from flipping up and over during activity. The main zipper has an internal draft flap to prevent the cold air from coming in.
This jacket has elastic wristbands which are fairly tight and not very forgiving, especially if you want to roll your sleeves up. Wearing gloves with the end tucked under the wristbands is impossible.
The hem of the jacket has a drawcord for adjusting it if needed which has two adjustment points, one on either hip. Where the tag is, along the rear of the neckline, there is a useful gear loop for hanging the jacket as needed. The jacket also comes with a separate stuff sack for packing.
The overall performance of the jacket was what you’d expect from a mid-layer. It would be recommended to be worn alone only at temperatures down to 50F but with an outer shell it could be worn in colder conditions. It has been tested in winds up to 30 mph and seemed to perform well keeping the majority of the cold air out. In very light rain, the jacket effectively kept the water at bay however it does become quickly saturated in any decent rain storm. Once wet, the primaloft insulation does quickly dry and it is ready for use in a short time.
The REI Women’s Revelcloud jacket is a good buy if you’re looking for an environmentally grean down alternative jacket with a great overall fit. It’s environmentally friendly design is a big plus and if you don’t mind the tight wristbands and wrinkled appearance it is recommended.
